UK military faces funding crisis as defence spending targets are missed

The United Kingdom’s defence establishment has issued warnings regarding a critical funding crisis that threatens military modernisation. An anonymous defence contractor described the situation as a “national emergency,” claiming the UK has “literally no money” for essential upgrades, specifically noting a lack of investment in autonomous systems.

Critics argue that the current administration is failing to address the scale of security threats, particularly from Russia. Former Defence Secretary Sir Ben Wallace has criticised the government’s Defence Investment Plan, stating that headline investment figures mask real-term cuts to the day-to-day running costs of the Ministry of Defence. He accused the government of using “spin and Treasury tricks” rather than providing necessary capital.

Chancellor John Healey faces scrutiny ahead of his first budget in October. The Treasury has confirmed that the government will not meet the previously outlined target of spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030. This follows Healey’s previous resignation as Defence Secretary over the government's failure to commit to vital spending targets.
