British military sites recorded 340 drone security incidents in the 12 months leading up to August 2026, according to Ministry of Defence data obtained via Freedom of Information requests. This represents a significant increase from 250 incidents in 2025 and 126 in 2024.

While the Ministry of Defence has not officially named the parties responsible, officials noted that the rise partly reflects improved detection and reporting capabilities following the establishment of restricted airspace over 44 strategic sites in February. The ministry stated that Russia is constantly probing and testing the UK, though it does not believe a direct confrontation with NATO is currently sought by the Kremlin.

Former Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood criticized the government's response, stating that the military is being viewed “as a target” and suggesting that Russia and Iran are “100 per cent” responsible for many of the incidents. He warned that while current drones are largely passive, the transition to kinetic, lethal capabilities would not require a major step. In response to the growing threat, the UK government has increased spending on counter-drone technology and granted military personnel expanded powers to neutralize unauthorized drones near defence sites.
