UK Minister visits Caribbean to discuss Haiti refugee crisis
British Minister for the Overseas Territories and the Caribbean, Uma Kumaran, conducted an official visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Dominican Republic to address regional stability and security. A primary focus of the discussions was the worsening refugee crisis in Haiti, driven by gang and political violence. The instability in Haiti has led to increased migration toward the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Dominican Republic.
In the Dominican Republic, talks also covered economic growth, clean energy, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Caribbean leaders gathered in Bermuda for the 2026 Overseas Territories Caribbean Caucus. This meeting, hosted by Bermuda, brought together leaders from Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and the Turks and Caicos Islands to discuss mutual interests, including constitutional modernization and climate resilience, ahead of upcoming meetings with the United Kingdom government.
