UK ministers consider noise reduction for consumer fireworks

UK ministers are considering proposals to limit the noise levels of consumer fireworks following public concern regarding their impact on animals and community safety. While a total ban on public sales has been ruled out, the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade has consulted on measures to reduce the permitted decibel level from 120dB to 110dB, which would approximately halve the loudness of consumer displays.

Animal welfare organizations, including the RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association, have advocated for these changes, citing instances of animal distress, injury, and fatalities linked to unregulated displays.

In Edinburgh, local authorities are implementing specific safety measures for Bonfire Night. Council Leader Jane Meagher announced the reintroduction and expansion of Firework Control Zones, which will prohibit fireworks in 14 areas of the city, including private property, from 30 October to 8 November. These zones, alongside enforcement by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, aim to mitigate anti-social behavior, litter, and public danger.
