UK Ministry of Defence funds paraglider and anti-drone tech

The UK Ministry of Defence is investing in new technologies to enhance troop insertion and battlefield protection. A £6-million study is underway to evaluate the use of foot-launched powered paragliders. This method aims to provide a more discreet way for reconnaissance and special forces to enter locations without the visibility associated with traditional aircraft-based parachute drops.

Additionally, the Ministry of Defence has launched Project PANOPTES, a £5-million initiative to develop autonomous, vehicle-mounted anti-drone capabilities. The project seeks to counter low-cost uncrewed aerial systems, specifically NATO Class 1 drones weighing up to 150 kg. The MoD is particularly interested in Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) effectors to defeat drone swarms and saturation attacks without exhausting conventional ammunition.
