UK Ministry of Defence targets NATO manufacturing growth and industrial jobs

The UK Ministry of Defence is implementing strategies to secure industrial benefits from NATO’s efforts to expand collective manufacturing capacity. Minister of State for Defence Luke Pollard stated that the department is utilizing NATO mechanisms, such as the Defence Production Action Plan and the NATO Defence Industrial Production Board, to boost aggregated demand and strengthen supply chain resilience.

These initiatives aim to move industry toward an ‘always on production’ model, addressing the historical issue of intermittent orders that left manufacturing capacity unable to surge during crises. Key focus areas include precision strike, air defence, autonomous systems, munitions, and anti-submarine warfare.

In Scotland, Ministry of Defence spending of £2.16 billion with industry during 2024/25 supported 12,200 direct industrial jobs, an increase of 800 from the previous year. Shipbuilding and submarines remain the largest sectors, accounting for 7,900 jobs. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander noted that the sector serves as a driver for economic growth, while Luke Pollard emphasized that rising defence budgets are contributing to nationwide reindustrialisation.
