UK motorists warned of insurance risks and fines

UK motorists face potential insurance complications and fines due to undeclared vehicle modifications and misconceptions regarding test drive coverage. Research from Tempcover indicates that approximately 1.5 million drivers may be operating with invalid insurance because they have failed to disclose non-factory changes to their vehicles.

Commonly undeclared modifications include aftermarket infotainment retrofits, such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, upgraded sound systems, and non-factory parking sensors. Other significant omissions include vinyl wraps, towbars, and engine ECU remapping. Failure to disclose these changes can lead to reduced claim payouts or the total cancellation of insurance cover.

Separately, experts are warning drivers during the busy September registration period to verify insurance status when test driving or collecting new vehicles. While many dealerships provide motor trade insurance, coverage levels vary and may only offer third-party protection, leaving drivers liable for damage to the vehicle being driven.
