UK MPs urge Prime Minister to prioritize obesity strategy
The Health and Social Care Committee has issued a critical report regarding the UK government’s plan to end the obesity epidemic, stating that MPs have “no faith” in the current strategy’s ability to succeed. The committee warned that the proposed “moonshot” lacks the necessary detail and a cohesive plan to achieve its ambitious goals.
Key components of the 10-year health plan include restrictions on junk food advertising targeted at children, bans on high-caffeine energy drink sales to minors, and mandatory reporting of healthy food sales by large companies. However, the report highlights significant delays and a lack of progress on several fronts, including the updated nutrient profiling model intended to reclassify high-fat, salt, and sugar products.
Committee chairwoman Layla Moran stated that an ambition without a plan risks appearing “naïve at best, or insincere at worst.” The committee urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to make tackling the obesity crisis a “personal mission” and called for clearly defined targets and milestones to ensure the strategy moves beyond mere ambition.
