UK national debt surpasses £3 trillion as inflation rises

The United Kingdom's public sector net debt surpassed £3 trillion for the first time at the end of September 2026. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the debt represents approximately 94% of the nation's GDP.

Simultaneously, annual inflation rose to 3.5% in September, up from 3.1% in August. This increase exceeded economist forecasts of 3.4% and marks the highest rate in nearly a year. The surge was primarily driven by rising transport costs, specifically motor fuels; annual motor fuel inflation climbed to 29.8%.

Government borrowing also exceeded expectations, reaching £24.5 billion in September, which was £1.9 billion higher than the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecast. Debt interest costs for the central government reached £10.9 billion during the month. These financial developments occur one week ahead of Chancellor John Healey's scheduled budget delivery on October 28.
