UK NEET crisis highlighted in Milburn report, prompting calls for welfare reform

Alan Milburn’s report on young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs) finds around one million in the United Kingdom, a figure that is rising and exceeds the EU average except for Romania. The study notes that six in ten NEETs have never held a job, up from four in ten in 2005, and that for every £25 spent on benefits for these young people, only £1 is allocated to programmes helping them return to work.

Business leaders, including a marketing agency in the music sector, argue that the lack of relevant training and apprenticeship funding makes it difficult to recruit and develop young talent, highlighting a gap between university curricula and industry needs.
