UK net zero policy faces political challenges
The United Kingdom is facing a collapse in political consensus regarding its net zero policies. Both the Conservative and Reform parties have criticized the targets, labeling them as too expensive and difficult to achieve.
Net zero refers to the goal of balancing greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide and methane, with their removal from the atmosphere. Achieving this requires transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like wind and solar, alongside adopting technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. While carbon removal methods like reforestation exist, they face limitations in scale and cost, making emission reduction the primary focus.
Climate change has contributed to extreme weather, including a record-breaking hot summer in the UK in 2026. The global effort to mitigate these impacts is guided by the 2015 Paris Agreement, which nearly 200 countries have signed.
