UK, Netherlands, Finland and Poland push ahead with Multilateral Defence Mechanism

Britain, the Netherlands, Finland and Poland said they have made "significant progress" on the new Multilateral Defence Mechanism (MDM) and aim to have it operational by 2027. The four countries issued a joint statement noting that the mechanism is designed to channel more private capital into the re‑arming of allied nations and that they will work to expand the coalition of participants, moving to the next development phase with countries that confirm involvement in the autumn.

Defence financing will be a key topic at the NATO summit in Ankara, where another initiative – the Defence, Security and Resilience Bank (DSRB) – is expected to be discussed. Canada plans to announce around ten founding members for the DSRB at the summit, while the United Kingdom has ruled out joining the DSRB in favour of focusing on the MDM project.
