UK New Home Registrations Slip 4% in Q2

The National Housebuilding Council (NHBC) reported that 29,162 new homes were registered for construction in the United Kingdom in the second quarter of 2026, a 4% decline from the same period a year earlier. Private‑sector registrations fell 5% to 19,045, while the rental and affordable sector remained largely unchanged at 10,117.

NHBC’s chief strategy officer, Daniel Pearce, attributed the slowdown to higher interest rates, rising costs and broader affordability pressures, adding that the drop was “little surprise.” He welcomed the newly announced house‑building commitments of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, saying they could serve as an “important lever” to boost overall supply, provided funding mechanisms are clarified. Regional data showed declines in six of twelve UK regions, with the largest drops in the South West, East Midlands and Wales. London recorded a notable rise in registrations, though Pearce warned that London’s figures are volatile and should be interpreted cautiously.
