UK nuclear waste transport faces proposed armed guard cuts

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has proposed reducing the number of armed guards escorting nuclear waste shipments in the United Kingdom as part of a cost-saving initiative. These shipments, which include materials ranging from enriched uranium to low-grade items like gloves, are transported via rail, road, and sea.

Critics, including former members of the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC), have expressed concerns that reducing security could increase risks, particularly regarding the potential for the material to be used in dirty bombs or poisoning devices. This comes amid heightened warnings regarding Russian ‘grey-war’ activities.

In response, Nuclear Transport Solutions stated that the proposals aim to reduce costs and complexity while maintaining robust safety and security outcomes to ensure they remain competitive in the market.
