UK offers free or low‑cost summer activities for families and children

The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, run by public libraries, lets children set reading goals and earn rewards at no cost. Throughout August, local bus services will allow children to travel for free, with adult fares capped at £3, while the PlusBus ticket offers unlimited local bus travel for train arrivals.

Suggested outings include visits to the Great North Museum in Newcastle, the National Trust’s Hatfield Forest in Essex, and coastal walks at Tynemouth. Many attractions such as museums, galleries and historic sites offer free entry, and additional activities like planetarium shows and art installations are available at low prices.
