RAF Fairford: UK PM cites strong indications of Iranian involvement in suspected plot

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated there are “strong indications” that Iran was involved in a suspected terrorist plot near RAF Fairford, a military airbase in Gloucestershire used by U.S. forces. The incident, which occurred over a weekend, led to the arrest of five British men in their 20s on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses.

While the suspects were later released on bail under strict conditions, investigators reported finding gasoline in their vans but no improvised explosive devices. The security response included the temporary evacuation of 85 homes in the nearby village of Whelford.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also noted that the incident clearly involves a foreign actor. The UK government is reportedly working closely with U.S. officials on the ongoing, complex investigation.

In response, the Iranian Embassy in London has categorically denied any involvement, describing the claims as “unfounded and malicious” and suggesting they are part of a propaganda effort.
