UK officials discuss potential return to free movement with EU

British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has confirmed that officials have begun discussions with the European Union regarding the long-term future of their relationship, which could include a return to free movement. While the possibility of restoring free movement is being explored as a future option, Reynolds emphasized that no decisions have been made and that the British public will ultimately decide the outcome.

The immediate priority for the UK government is the upcoming EU-UK summit in November. Negotiations leading up to the summit are focused on achieving tangible improvements in specific areas, including food and drink trade, emissions trading, electricity cooperation, and a youth mobility deal.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to present the various options and trade-offs for a stable, long-term relationship with the bloc following the summit. The government noted that current discussions remain within the bounds of the 2024 Labour Party manifesto, which did not include returning to the single market, customs union, or free movement.
