UK oral health poll reveals major gap in brushing and flossing habits
A survey of 2,000 UK adults found that 88% do not follow dentist‑recommended oral care routines. Only 12% stick to the advised practice, with 63% brushing for less than two minutes and 16% brushing once a day. Seventy‑four percent admit they never floss, half still use a manual toothbrush, and 11% do not use fluoride toothpaste. The Oral Health Foundation reports that nearly one‑quarter of UK adults have untreated tooth decay and 9% show signs of severe gum disease. The findings coincide with Oral‑B’s "Brush for Better" campaign, which will tour the UK in a mobile dental bus from July to September 2026 before donating the bus to the charity Dentaid.
In the United States, CDC data for 2023 shows more than one in four adults have untreated tooth decay. Research links poor oral health to heart disease, diabetes complications, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, underscoring the importance of annual dental checkups. Early‑stage gum disease (gingivitis) is painless but reversible with professional cleaning, while untreated disease can progress to periodontitis, causing bone loss and long‑term health challenges.
