ChatGPT helps UK driver win three-year parking fine dispute
A driver in the United Kingdom successfully used ChatGPT to contest a parking fine that escalated into a three-year legal dispute. Rafal Goral was issued a £100 penalty by Smart Parking Limited in Newquay, Cornwall, after his payment via a mobile app was processed 16 minutes after entering the lot. The delay was attributed to long queues at cash-only machines and poor mobile reception.
Over the course of the dispute, the demanded amount increased to approximately £300 as debt collection agencies became involved. Goral utilized ChatGPT to draft appeals and prepare his legal defense for a scheduled court hearing. Following the use of AI-generated arguments, Smart Parking Limited withdrew the claim shortly before the trial was set to proceed.
Goral noted that while he sought guidance from Citizens Advice, he found the directions provided by ChatGPT to be more useful in managing the correspondence and preparing his case.
