UK Parliament misplaced over 65 works of art including Disraeli portrait
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that more than 65 works of art have been misplaced by UK parliamentary authorities since the start of 2024. The missing items include a photograph of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli taken by John Jabez Edwin Mayall, an engraved portrait of anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce, and a photograph of Margaret Beckett, the UK’s first female foreign secretary.
Other missing pieces include a satirical cartoon by Martin Rowson from the 1995 Conservative leadership contest and a cartoon of Barbara Castle. A parliamentary spokesperson explained that the items are part of a working collection and are frequently moved during estate works. Authorities clarified that none of the artworks have been permanently written off. Since the beginning of the year, five artworks have already been recovered.
