UK Parliament to investigate dismal Eurovision Song Contest record
The UK Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee is set to investigate the United Kingdom’s recent poor performance at the Eurovision Song Contest. Following a series of low rankings, including a last-place finish this year by Look Mum No Computer with only one point, cross-party MPs aim to scrutinize the selection process for acts and songs.
Dame Caroline Dinenage, the Conservative MP chairing the committee, stated the goal is to determine whether the country’s “dismal” record is due to song choice, performer quality, or other factors. The committee plans to hold hearings over the coming months and expects to hear from the BBC and various music industry experts.
While the UK has won the competition five times, its recent history has been marked by disappointment. Since 2016, the country has only finished in the top 20 three times. Notable recent results include James Newman receiving “nul points” in 2021 and Sam Ryder achieving a second-place finish in 2022.
