UK pension shortfall: Millions face significant retirement savings gaps

Research from Wealthify, an investment platform by Aviva, indicates that most age groups in the UK are projected to fall short of the savings required for a moderate retirement. According to Pensions UK, a moderate retirement budget—which includes specific allowances for food, annual holidays, and vehicle replacement—requires approximately £32,700 per year.

The study highlights significant gaps in projected savings. The 45-54 age group faces a shortfall of £312,110, while those aged 55-65 are projected to be £269,356 short. Only Millennials (ages 25-34) currently have retirement expectations that align with the predicted requirements for a moderate lifestyle.

There is also a discrepancy between youth expectations and official data. While 16-17-year-olds surveyed expect to retire at an average age of 52.6, recent government figures show the actual average retirement age is rising, standing at 65.7 for men and 64.5 for women. Additionally, 62% of 55-64-year-olds surveyed expressed regret over not taking pension contributions more seriously earlier in life.
