UK planning approvals granted for office conversions and student housing

Various urban redevelopment projects have received planning approvals in the United Kingdom. In Pontnewydd, Cwmbran, Torfaen Borough Council has approved the conversion of a vacant office building into a three-bedroom residential home. The property, owned by Alpha Sierra Property, has been empty for six years. Planning officers noted that the conversion would increase footfall and diversify the use of the commercial centre, with minimal external alterations required.

In Newcastle Upon Tyne, a planning committee narrowly approved a student housing development by developer Argon. The project, designed by Corstorphine & Wright, involves the demolition of the vacant Hadrian House, an eight-storey Modernist office block, to be replaced by a building ranging from 15 to 23 storeys. Despite concerns regarding the height and its impact on nearby listed heritage sites, planning officers concluded the development would provide a high-quality contemporary building that contributes to the city skyline.
