UK plans economic sanctions and trade bans on West Bank settlements

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has announced plans for a comprehensive reset of United Kingdom policy regarding West Bank settlements. The new government intends to introduce a package of measures, including economic sanctions and a ban on goods produced in the settlements, to prevent further Israeli expansion in the occupied territories.

Miliband stated that the UK is examining its wider economic relationship with the territories to ensure British companies are not financing, constructing, or advertising new settlements. This move has drawn sharp criticism from various Jewish organizations and leaders, including the American Jewish Committee and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who argue that such trade bans could jeopardize future peace negotiations.

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar warned that the Jewish State is prepared to take retaliatory steps if the UK proceeds with these actions.
