UK police unit flags 106 social media posts for potential arrest

The National Internet Intelligence Investigations unit, a specialist British police task force, has referred 106 social media posts to local law enforcement for potential arrest. Data obtained through Freedom of Information requests indicates that 50 of these flags occurred in June alone.

The unit's activity follows public unrest and protests in Southampton linked to the murder of Henry Nowak. The task force itself traces its origins to the response following the Southport riots. Police officials have declined to provide specific details regarding the flagged content, stating that disclosure could interfere with ongoing investigations.

Authorities noted that the initiative is in its early stages, suggesting the volume of flagged posts may increase. The National Police Coordination Centre defended the unit, stating its mission is to support the understanding of protest-related activity and identify emerging risks within the online environment.
