UK political funding: Andy Burnham seeks to limit private donations

Andy Burnham is seeking to curb the influx of private funding into British politics. While the UK government has already committed to capping annual donations from overseas British residents at £100,000, there is growing pressure to implement similar limits for donors residing within the United Kingdom.

Labour MP Stella Creasy has highlighted a significant rise in large-scale donations, noting that contributions of £1 million or more from individuals and companies have increased sharply over the last decade. One notable example includes billionaire Christopher Harborne, a supporter of Reform UK, who provided a £9 million single donation last year.

Currently, there are no restrictions on the amount UK-based donors can contribute to political parties or individual politicians. Critics argue that such large sums allow donors to exert undue influence over political agendas. Creasy previously proposed an amendment to cap donations at £500,000, reducing to £100,000 in the second year, a measure signed by over 60 MPs but not put to a vote.
