UK Power Networks Enhances ChargePoint Navigator for EV Rollout

UK Power Networks has released an upgraded version of its free ChargePoint Navigator platform, giving local authorities around the United Kingdom more detailed data on connection costs, eligibility, timelines and site viability for public electric‑vehicle (EV) chargers. The new Connections Insights dashboard and visual tools aim to speed site selection and improve first‑time application success, which the network reports rose from 37 % to 100 % among early users. The platform, launched in 2024, is now used by over 100 of the 133 local councils in the UK Power Networks licence area and has been adopted by other regional network operators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A broader analysis of EV‑charging strategy highlights the trade‑offs between centralized and distributed infrastructure. Centralised sites, such as fleet depots or large public hubs, provide operational control, simplified maintenance and easier load‑balancing but require higher upfront installation costs and large electrical capacity. Distributed chargers spread across workplaces, residential complexes and hotels improve accessibility and reduce single‑point load but can increase management complexity. Organizations must weigh user behaviour, space availability and scalability when choosing a model for future EV‑charging growth.
