Antigua and Barbuda hosts 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting

The 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is currently taking place in Antigua and Barbuda. Under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” leaders from the 56-nation organization are meeting to discuss trade, climate change, and economic resilience for the Commonwealth’s 2.7 billion citizens.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has indicated openness to a formal apology for the United Kingdom’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade. However, Burnham explicitly rejected the idea of financial reparations, stating that current British citizens should not be held liable for historical wrongs committed under different laws. This stance follows comments from Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who described the UK’s openness to dialogue as a “watershed moment.”

King Charles III attended the official opening ceremony, emphasizing the need for investment in education and job creation to foster sustainable development. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute used the summit to present his country’s economic potential and natural resources to international investors. To support the event, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda received 20 Zeekr 7X electric vehicles from Geely Motors.
