UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham seeks closer UK-EU ties
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is advocating for a more ambitious rapprochement between the United Kingdom and the European Union. During a meeting with European Council President António Costa, Burnham emphasized that London must take bolder steps to bridge the gap created by Brexit.
Burnham proposes using existing strong partnerships in security and defense as a foundation for broader bilateral cooperation. This strategy is driven by the need for increased coordination in response to continental threats, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Prime Minister’s remarks coincided with his travel to Ukraine to co-chair a ‘Coalition of Volunteers’ meeting.
While the UK government seeks to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and improve trade relations, progress has been gradual. Both leaders indicated that an upcoming summit between the UK and the EU would serve as an ideal platform to advance these objectives and potentially expand cooperation across all facets of the relationship.
