UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham reviews public inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took office in July, is reviewing whether to launch a public inquiry into the activities of convicted sex‑offender Jeffrey Epstein in the United Kingdom. Victims minister Alex Davies‑Jones told BBC Newsnight that Burnham has agreed to meet Epstein’s survivors and that the government is “looking into” the possibility of an inquiry. The review also covers alleged sexual‑misconduct by former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed – more than 400 accusations spanning 1977‑2014 – and the Metropolitan Police are investigating at least 156 alleged victims linked to Al Fayed.
The Ministry of Justice later clarified that a public inquiry into Epstein is not being actively considered, despite the minister’s earlier comments. An Early Day Motion signed by 95 MPs calls for a full inquiry, and a statutory inquiry into grooming‑gang victims is already under way. Separate investigations have led to the arrests of Andrew Mountbatten‑Windsor and former ambassador Peter Mandelson in connection with the Epstein case.
