UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged to order fresh review of 1994 RAF Chinook crash
Families of the 29 service personnel killed when a RAF Chinook HC‑2 helicopter crashed into the Mull of Kintyre on 2 June 1994 are pressing new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to meet them within his first 100 days and order an independent review of the tragedy. The crash occurred on a flight from RAF Aldergrove in Northern Ireland to Inverness and involved intelligence officers from MI5, the British Army and the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
A 2011 inquiry overturned the original finding that the pilots were at fault but did not determine the cause. A recent High Court ruling dismissed the families' legal claim against the Ministry of Defence as being time‑barred. The Chinook Justice Campaign, representing more than 55 relatives of the victims, says it will take the case to the European Court of Human Rights and seeks a review that is free from MoD involvement, citing concerns that Ministry‑supplied airworthiness data may have been inaccurate.
