UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged to prioritize food security and back Good Food Bill

Andy Burnham has taken office as the United Kingdom's prime minister. The National Farmers' Union (NFU) sent a letter to Downing Street urging the new leader to adopt its five‑point food‑security roadmap, which calls for investment, innovation and workforce support to make the food supply chain more resilient.

A Food Foundation report released alongside the appointment of Yvette Cooper as health secretary highlighted a rise in UK household food insecurity to 12.2%, affecting roughly 6.5 million adults and 2.2 million children. Advocates are pressing the government to introduce a Good Food Bill with legally binding targets on fruit and vegetable consumption, obesity reduction and food‑insecurity mitigation, alongside measures such as expanding the Healthy Start benefit for low‑income families.
