UK Prime Minister announces nationwide technical education overhaul

The Prime Minister unveiled a major reform of the education system, placing technical education on an equal footing with academic study. From age 14 (Year 10), pupils will be able to combine core subjects such as English, maths and science with high‑quality technical routes linked to local job markets. The new pathways include T‑levels, apprenticeships and other technical qualifications, and will be supported by increased funding, employer work‑experience placements and revised school performance measures.

The plan builds on successful pilots such as the Greater Manchester Baccalaureate, extending the model across England. Officials say the change aims to address the sharp decline in starter‑job adverts and the high number of young people aged 16‑24 who are not in education, employment or training, by providing clearer routes from school to sustainable employment.
