UK Prime Minister Burnham discusses Falkland Islands with Chile and US leaders

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has engaged in high-level diplomatic discussions regarding the Falkland Islands sovereignty dispute and the Sea Lion oil project. In a telephone call with Chilean President José Antonio Kast, Burnham sought support for the islanders' right to self-determination and discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in defense, security, science, and trade. The leaders also touched upon modernizing military capabilities and potential naval cooperation.

Burnham also held talks with US President Donald Trump, where he raised concerns regarding the economic consequences of Argentina’s “coercive measures” against the United Kingdom and the United States. The conversation included the Sea Lion project, a joint venture between Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum aimed at oil extraction in the South Atlantic.

This diplomatic activity follows Argentina’s filing of a provisional measure with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to halt the drilling venture. Argentine President Javier Milei has reaffirmed his administration's claim to the islands and vowed to fast-track sanctions against oil firms operating in the territory.
