UK Prime Minister explores potential return to the European Union
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is exploring the possibility of the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union. Officials at Downing Street have contacted public opinion research agencies and think tanks to gauge whether there is a consensus for such a move, which could potentially be included in the Labour Party’s next manifesto.
During his first speech at the party conference, Burnham stated that Brexit has caused more harm than benefit. He announced a planned review of Britain’s relationship with Europe, noting that options range from maintaining the status quo to pursuing a customs union, a single market arrangement, or full EU membership. This marks a significant shift in stance compared to his predecessor, Keir Starmer, who had explicitly rejected the idea of rejoining.
While some Downing Street officials advocate for a formal commitment to initiate re-entry negotiations, others express concern that such a promise could politically benefit Nigel Farage and the Reform UK party. While EU allies have welcomed the comments as a potential driver for economic growth, political opponents, including representatives from the Conservative Party, have criticized the proposal.
