UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks closer ties with EU

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for serious dialogue to reset the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, stating that the current state of affairs is “not good enough for Britain.” Speaking to Parliament, Starmer emphasized that failing to explore closer ties with Brussels would constitute a “grave failure of duty.”

Starmer aims to leverage a summit scheduled for November 20 in Brussels to secure agreements in key sectors, including food and drink, youth mobility, and carbon emissions trading. He estimates these improvements could boost the British economy by approximately £10 billion annually. The Prime Minister noted that while Brexit caused more harm than benefit, the government must remain pragmatic to address migration and stimulate economic growth.

While Starmer expressed openness to discussing the long-term future of the relationship—including the possibility of eventual EU membership—he did not call for a new referendum. The Conservative Party has rejected reopening Brexit debates to avoid wasting time and effort. Starmer urged all political parties to support his efforts to achieve positive outcomes during the upcoming summit.
