Cyber attacks rise among small businesses and property firms
Recent reports indicate a rising threat of cyber attacks targeting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and Germany. According to the Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report, 38% of small UK firms suffered a successful hack in the past year, with an average cost of approximately $35,908 per incident. British firms were identified as more vulnerable than the global average of 29%.
In Germany, roughly 31% of SMEs were victims of cyber attacks last year. One-third of those affected reported that the attacks significantly threatened their solvency or existence. Common attack methods include payment diversion fraud (45%) and DDoS attacks (42%).
Additionally, the property services sector is facing increased scrutiny. Karis Insurance reported a 17% rise in cyber attacks against British property businesses in the year ending December 2025. Estate agents and surveyors are becoming prime targets because they hold sensitive personal and financial data—such as passports, bank details, and mortgage information—comparable to that held by banks, yet often lack equivalent security measures.
