UK pub chain Wetherspoons expects World Cup boost to lift sales amid consumer pressure

JD Wetherspoon anticipates that warm summer weather and the ongoing World Cup will bolster its UK pub sales as it prepares a fourth‑quarter trading update on July 22. The company, which issued a profit warning earlier in the year and saw its shares fall to a one‑year low in March, has since recovered some ground.

Like‑for‑like sales rose 6.1% in the second quarter but slowed to 3.4% in the third quarter, reflecting weaker consumer confidence partly linked to the conflict in the Middle East. To highlight the tax burden on the hospitality sector, Wetherspoons is offering a one‑day price cut on all food and drinks.

The group faces additional cost pressures, forecasting about £60 million in extra expenses from wage increases and National Insurance contributions, plus a £2.4 million packaging levy. Managing director Tim Martin is expected to renew calls for reduced VAT on the sector, while investors look for a more positive cost outlook.
