UK publishers launch £2m campaign to boost in-store magazine sales

Major UK magazine publishers have launched a £2 million campaign titled ‘Magazines: In The World’s Best Interests’ to encourage in-store purchases. Coordinated by the Professional Publishers Association (PPA) and organized by distributors Frontline and Marketforce, the initiative marks the first such collaboration in a decade.

Participating publishers include Bauer, DC Thomson, Immediate, Future, Hearst, Condé Nast, Anthem, Egmont, and New Scientist. The campaign aims to highlight the unique experience of print and its role in connecting communities, while also reinforcing the value of the category to retailers. The marketing strategy includes print advertisements, billboards, radio, podcasts, and outdoor screens.

The move represents a strategic shift away from a recent industry focus on direct subscriptions, which can compete with retail sales. This comes as magazine shelf space faces increasing pressure from supermarket range cuts and retail closures. The first phase, ‘Editor’s Note’, features handwritten-style letters from editors within magazines to thank readers for their support.
