UK pumpkin farmers face crop devastation from drought
UK pumpkin farmers are facing devastating harvest losses due to extreme weather conditions. A series of heatwaves and a prolonged drought across England and Wales have severely impacted crop yields, threatening the popular seasonal ‘pick-your-own’ tradition.
Farmers report catastrophic declines in production. In Suffolk, Andrew King noted a drop from a typical 10,000 pumpkins to just 25. In Kent, John Harris of Broadditch Farm estimated his yield would fall from 25,000 to only a few thousand. Other growers, such as Laura Brady of Wonky Parsnip farm, have announced they will not open for the season at all.
The recurring weather instability is forcing small, independent agricultural operations to reconsider their long-term viability and future farming strategies.
