Starting Sunday, 20 September 2026, UK rail passengers facing cancelled services will be able to use their original tickets on trains operated by other participating companies without purchasing new tickets.

The new policy allows travelers to board alternative services departing up to two hours before or after their scheduled cancelled train, provided the route is direct or a reasonable alternative. Passengers will not need to download new tickets; they can simply present their original ticket to onboard staff.

While cross-operator ticket acceptance was already available for publicly owned operators, this expansion includes private companies such as Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, and Great Western Railway. East Midlands Railway is expected to join the scheme at a later date. Alex Robertson, chief executive of the watchdog Transport Focus, called the move a “welcome change” intended to reduce passenger frustration during service disruptions.
