UK rail sector sees major investments and service disruptions
Significant rail developments and disruptions are occurring across the United Kingdom. A £115 million investment project at Manchester Airport station is set to begin this winter, led by Network Rail and contractor Kier. The upgrades, scheduled for completion by 2028, include extending platforms 1, 2, and 3, upgrading track layouts, and modernizing signaling systems.
In Buckinghamshire, construction has progressed on the HS2 ‘green tunnel’ near Wendover, featuring a mile-long cut-and-cover structure designed to mitigate noise for local residents. Meanwhile, infrastructure stability work is planned for Sonning Cutting, involving bridge closures in Woodley through 2028.
On the operational side, major disruption has hit the line between York and Newcastle following a person being hit by a train. LNER reported that all lines were closed during emergency service activity, leading to cancellations and the deployment of rail replacement road transport.
