UK railways prepare for extreme heat and El Niño impacts

UK railway companies are accelerating preparations for extreme weather conditions as the El Niño phenomenon threatens to bring record-breaking heat. The UK rail system, which was not originally designed for high-temperature operations, faces significant pressure on tracks and overhead power systems.

Network Rail has described the situation as a “particularly serious challenge.” In response, the organization has increased its five-year spending on climate-related items, including earthworks and drainage systems, by five times compared to 2019 levels. Experts suggest that the UK may need to update design standards by adopting practices from countries with hotter climates, such as Spain and Saudi Arabia.

The Met Office has warned that a strengthening El Niño in the Pacific could lead to more intense weather patterns. Beyond heatwaves, the rail industry must also prepare for increased rainfall, storms, and flooding. Immediate mitigation efforts include clearing drainage systems, inspecting culverts, and managing vegetation in high-risk areas.
