UK records over 2,000 Channel migrant arrivals since PM Andy Burnham took office
The UK Home Office reported that 2,076 migrants arrived in small boats via the English Channel after Labour leader Andy Burnham became prime minister on 20 July, up from 1,962 in the same period a year earlier. Since the start of the year, a total of 14,526 people have crossed, representing a 43% drop compared with the same period in 2025 and a 14% decline from 2024.
The government said it has achieved a record number of returns of irregular arrivals and that asylum applications fell by 12% during the period. Nearly 70,000 individuals have been expelled or deported, a 41% increase. A historic agreement with France was signed to boost beach surveillance and bring people‑smuggling networks to justice. Prime Minister Burnham said the plan to curb irregular migration is delivering results but requires further effort.
