UK refuse collectors warn against using black bags in recycling bins

Refuse collector Ashley, known on social media as the No. 1 Binman, explained that black plastic bags are frequently rejected from household recycling collections. The bags are opaque, making it impossible for collection crews to see their contents, and they can clog sorting machines, leading to contamination and missed collections.

He advised residents to place recyclable material loose in the bin or, if the material is already in a black bag, to take it to larger out‑of‑home recycling points. Recycling charity Recycle Now added that empty plastic bags and wrapping can be recycled at designated facilities, but filled bags are usually not accepted. Local councils set specific guidelines, so households should check their area’s rules to avoid bins being left uncollected.
