UK regions implement new cancer strategies
The UK is seeing new developments in cancer policy across different regions. In England, the National Cancer Plan, first published in February 2026, serves as the first dedicated cancer strategy for the nation in a decade. Implementation challenges remain, specifically regarding clinical research, cancer prevention, earlier diagnosis, and reducing waiting times. Experts emphasize the need to translate these ambitions into practice within a changing health system.
In Scotland, the Scottish Government has committed to a refreshed Cancer Strategy for Children and Young People. This follows campaigning by the charity Young Lives vs Cancer to ensure continued support for pediatric patients, whose biological needs and treatment requirements differ from adults. Approximately 320 children and young people in Scotland are diagnosed with cancer annually, often facing significant financial and developmental challenges.
