UK regulator probes Ryanair's mandatory family seat fees
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an investigation into Ryanair, Europe's largest low‑cost carrier, over its policy that requires parents travelling with children aged 2‑11 to purchase a mandatory family seat. The charge, typically around £8 per flight, is being examined for possible unfairness under consumer law. Ryanair denies any breach, describing the probe as “bogus” and saying the fee only applies to the adult’s reserved seat, with children seated free of charge. The CMA said it could impose fines of up to 10% of Ryanair’s global turnover if the practice is found unlawful and expects to report its findings within six months. This follows a 2024 court ruling that blocked similar extra charges for families. The investigation forms part of the CMA’s broader effort to curb hidden fees amid cost‑of‑living pressures in Britain.
