UK regulators implement reforms to accelerate nuclear projects

UK regulators are implementing reforms to accelerate the delivery of nuclear projects and enhance energy security. The Environment Agency has outlined plans to improve the pace, predictability, and proportionality of nuclear regulation while maintaining environmental protection and public confidence. These efforts include strengthening governance, improving regulatory coordination, and delivering cost efficiencies across the UK nuclear programme.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is also undergoing a transformation to become a more agile and productive organization. Key initiatives include the creation of a Lead Nuclear Regulator Group to improve coordination and an Industry CEO Forum to address behaviors causing unnecessary delays.

John Fingleton, author of a government-commissioned review on regulatory barriers, warned that Whitehall must avoid risk aversion and ensure that the UK is not unnecessarily ‘locked into’ pre-Brexit EU environmental rules, which could slow the nation’s efforts to boost domestic nuclear capacity.
