UK rental energy targets require clear government roadmap
The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) and the Energy Saving Trust have called on the UK government to provide a clear roadmap for meeting 2030 energy efficiency targets in the private rented sector. Following a parliamentary roundtable chaired by Clive Betts MP, the organizations issued a briefing warning that a lack of certainty could lead to a rush of demand near the deadline, straining installers, supply chains, and local council enforcement teams.
To ensure successful delivery, the briefing emphasizes the need for accessible finance, a larger pool of skilled tradespeople through increased training and apprenticeships, and reliable advice. Experts also recommended that the proposed Warm Homes Agency provide impartial guidance for both landlords and tenants.
Additional recommendations include simplifying complaints and redress processes, providing more resources for council enforcement, and offering tailored support for older or disabled tenants and those at risk of fuel poverty. NRLA chief executive Ben Beadle noted that while recent government framework changes have improved workability, urgent certainty is required to allow landlords, lenders, and local authorities to prepare for the scale of upgrades needed.
