UK researchers develop new technologies for 6G and wireless communications

Researchers in the United Kingdom are developing new material and chip technologies to advance high-frequency wireless communications, such as 6G.

Scientists at Queen Mary University of London have discovered that making atomic-scale adjustments to strontium titanate ceramics can significantly enhance electrical response. By replacing some atoms with smaller calcium atoms, they created tiny polar nanoclusters that allow the material to tune its performance via voltage or temperature. This breakthrough offers a low-energy, lead-free method for creating reconfigurable antennas and adaptive communication networks.

In a separate development, a collaborative team including Loughborough University has demonstrated a rice-grain-sized microchip capable of producing stable, precise millimeter-wave signals. Using a microcomb structure, the chip generates a spectrum of light frequencies that can be converted into multiple millimeter-wave signals. This technology is aimed at supporting the high speed and capacity required for 6G networks, as well as applications in radar, spectroscopy, and quantum timing.
